Sean Dennehy, chairman of the Irish Farmers' Association's National Sheep Association (IFA), said the group had informed the management of the Irish Country Meats meat processing company about the sheep’s indignation over lamb prices.
The Irish Farmers Association said that "factories in the last two weeks have reduced the price of lamb and destroyed the income of farmers."
At a meeting between the Irish Farmers' Association and senior Irish Country Meats, the IFA demanded that the factories stabilize and restore lamb prices and stop undermining the market by lowering prices.
“The IFA has convincingly pushed Irish Country Meats to increase the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Bonus to 30 cents per kilogram. We also made it clear that if factories want a lighter lamb, they must pay farmers a decent price premium, ”said the chairman of the IFA National Sheep Association.
The Irish Farmers Association also called on the Irish Country Meats to end their unjust, far-fetched fees from farmers, who, according to Dennehy, are “completely wrong.”
Dennehy added that the topic of unfair anti-competitive tactics of price reductions was raised at a meeting with Agriculture Minister Michael Creed earlier this week.
According to IFA, Minister Creed said he would challenge the factories' decisions regarding lowering mutton prices and unfair fees.
