60% of all covered ground in Ukraine is reserved for growing tomatoes, and cucumbers grow by 40%. These are mainly glass greenhouses, said Lyudmila Nalbat, commercial director of the Kalinovka Premium trading house.
According to Lyudmila Nalbat, 29 large farms in the country, own greenhouses with a total area of 280 hectares.
In the western and southern regions of the country there are 8 thousand hectares of film greenhouses, where, in addition to traditional cucumbers and tomatoes, pepper and cabbage are grown.
In Ukraine, the number of greenhouses is decreasing, for several reasons: quotas and the lack of subsidies, as well as the high price of energy, said Alexander Didyk, Deputy General Director for Commercial Affairs of PJSC Zmievskaya Vegetable Factory.
Greenhouses need to be heated, and at current energy prices this is not affordable for everyone. State support is not provided with subsidies, there are no preferential taxation and quotas for the import of vegetables - this is the reason for cutting back on growing areas in Ukraine, the expert said.
In such European countries as Poland, Germany, Sweden, Norway there is a profitable and developed crop production in closed ground, as there is state support.
