French authorities have created a police unit to fight crimes against farmers, including the prevention of ecoterrorist attacks.
A special unit of the gendarmerie called Demeter monitors damage and crime on the farms.
According to the official website of the French Ministry of the Interior, the creation of new branches was justified by the rapid growth of criminal acts against the property and the farmers themselves. Finally, the government has responded to calls from rural communities to counter this.
One of the reasons for the creation of Demeter is the escalation of acts of aggression against farmers by environmental activists and the so-called animal advocates.
Direct speech: “In recent years, this phenomenon has intensified. Our farmers are increasingly being threatened, humiliated and insulted. Strangers rush in and block farms. They go to pasture and shoot videos that they publish with dirty comments on social networks.
In 2019, a total of 14,498 crimes aimed at farmers, their property and possessions were recorded in France.
Sometimes the attackers even destroy, set fire and steal property, ”the website of the French Ministry of the Interior says. So animal advocates at a farm in Ayr burglarized and fired 1,400 turkeys, most of whom died.
Created as part of the National Gendarmerie, the Demeter cell collaborates with farmers' organizations and industry associations to respond to the signals of all farmers, to predict and prevent attacks more effectively.
The French ministry guarantees that all actions aimed at farmers and their property and showing signs of crime will now be prosecuted.
Demeter's area of interest will include all crimes affecting farmers and their farms.
