In the city of Helsinki, two researchers, who are not indifferent to the fate of bees, have developed a unique vaccine. According to scientists, vaccinations will save insects from deadly bacterial infections and improve the bee population.
Of course, it is not possible to give an injection to bees in the classical sense of this procedure. Therefore, insects will simply feed the vaccine. The principle of vaccination will be as follows: PrimeBEE is fed to the queen bee, which will pass the beneficial properties of the drug to its descendants by inheritance.
“First of all, you need to understand that the immunity of bees is different from the immune system of animals,” says researcher Dalal Freitak. - The genetic memory of the bee stores immune features and allows the accumulation of antibodies. That is, having vaccinated one bee, we can transfer the so-called genetic team to subsequent generations. ”
The main goal of PrimeBEE is to protect bees from such bacteriological adversity as American foulbrood. She is known for her destructive effect on bee brood.
“I want to believe that soon we will be able to withdraw drugs against many other bee diseases,” one of the developers, Heli Salmela, is optimistic about the future. - We are constantly conducting experiments to achieve our cherished goal: to create an antidote to any pathogenic microorganisms. In the meantime, we have applied for a patent for PrimeBEE. If everything goes smoothly, beekeepers will be able to purchase our product as early as next year. ”
